How do Heat Pumps work?

Basically like a fridge in reverse!
A heat pump contains refrigerant, which is colder that the outside air (boiling point -48.5 C). Air is drawn into a heat exchanger where the refrigerant absorbs the latent heat from the outside air and evaporates.
The vaporised refrigerant is then compressed increasing its pressure and temperature, (effectively concentrating the heat).
This hot vapour is condensed in the second heat exchanger and the heat is then transferred to water for space heating or domestic hot water after which the vapour condenses back into a liquid.
The liquid refrigerant passes back through an expansion valve, ready to start the cycle again.
